As a result of enlightenment, the sciences stretched the traditional Western conception of space and time to the seemingly infinite. The universe became older, larger, and colder. This is also associated with the experience of insecurity, no longer being at the center of the universe, no longer being anchored in a worldview that can extract the final meaning of history. The threat of an apocalypse was replaced by a geological continuity of catastrophes and changes. There is a dawning awareness of a uncanny, elevated indifference towards the human scale in a universe that is neither empty nor alive, but rather lifeless.
