The Mauthausen concentration camp was exclusively a men's camp until 1942. The first women arrived in Mauthausen in the summer of 1942 as part of the establishment of prisoner brothels, and shortly thereafter also in Gusen. In 1944, external camps for women were established to gain access to the labor of female prisoners for the war industry. It was not until early 1945 that the SS began to accommodate women in the main camp. However, women existed in the Mauthausen concentration camp complex not only as prisoners. Female guards, wives of SS members, and women from the surrounding area of the concentration camp played very different roles, which will be explained and discussed in this thematic tour.
