Thematic Tour: The First Dachau Mauthausen Trial 1946

On March 29, 1946, the largest post-war trial against members of the Mauthausen guard team began on the grounds of the former Dachau concentration camp. A total of 61 men were prosecuted by the US prosecution with the aim of addressing all hierarchical levels and functional areas of the concentration camp administration, thereby creating a comprehensive picture of the Mauthausen crime complex. The tour retraces the major trial and looks at its background and aftermath. Central questions include: Who were the defendants? What witnesses were heard? What crimes were prosecuted and which were not? How was the trial reported in the media? What were the verdicts, and what role did the trial play in further legal proceedings?
