Thematic tour: The history of the Gusen concentration camp memorial from 1945 to the present.

This tour explores the tumultuous history of the memorial site Gusen from 1945 to the present. Unlike the former concentration camp Mauthausen, which has been a state memorial since 1949, the memory of the former concentration camp Gusen, including the establishment of the Gusen Memorial, was solely due to foreign and domestic private initiatives until the late 1990s. While Mauthausen developed into a central place for grappling with National Socialism in Austria from the 1970s onwards, Gusen was virtually nonexistent in the public consciousness in Austria until a few years ago.
