Thematic Tour: The Role of Football in the Gusen Concentration Camp: Framework Conditions, Actors, and Significance

"I went to the roll call square. What a sight! On the square, two teams in sports gear: a soccer game, cheered on by the audience shouting in various languages." How can these memories of Polish concentration camp survivor Stanisław Grzesiuk be placed in a context where about 36,000 people were murdered? Who played soccer in the concentration camp and why? And what functions did soccer serve for the SS men, who held games right next to the concentration camp? During the joint tour, these questions will be explored in more detail through photos, drawings, eyewitness accounts, and other documents, and will be discussed together. The speaker will present new source material discovered during research for a master's thesis on the subject.
