TOURDATA
Museumsplatz 3, 3500 Krems an der Donau
A cartoonist who stands for something! Oliver Schopf, a long-time illustrator for Der Standard, humorously and precisely brings current events to paper. The major solo exhibition at the Karikaturmuseum Krems showcases the full range of his work – from caricatures and courtroom sketches to large-format watercolors and still lifes.
A sharp eye on politics and society
Oliver Schopf is regarded as a master of critical drawing. Since 1988, he has been commenting on events in Austria and around the world for the Austrian daily newspaper Der Standard. The works of the native Tyrolean can also be found in international media, such as Die Zeit, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Le Monde, The Guardian, and El País.
Illustrative analyst of prominent court cases
As a courtroom sketch artist, Schopf, born in 1960, has developed his own mastery. His drawings not only document significant trials but also capture the subtle thought and decision-making processes.
Thematic and stylistic diversity in around 200 images
A naked René Benko wandering from paradise to the defendant's bench, a state Trojan horse as a wired Statue of Liberty, or notable personalities from the world of chess: The works, created either traditionally in ink or digitally, address current topics and personal passions with precision. The exhibition tour takes visitors through caricatures related to politics, economics, and society. Special attention is given to Schopf's courtroom sketches, which vividly illustrate prominent cases such as BUWOG, the BAWAG affair, and the proceedings surrounding Blauensteiner and Udo Proksch. The large-format watercolors on construction, environment, and architecture, as well as still lifes, landscape drawings, illustrations, and studies, make the museum visit a varied experience.
In collaboration with the Stiftung Forum Verfassung, selected caricatures by Schopf vividly convey the central tasks of the Constitutional Court.
