Thematic Tour: Between Censorship and Hope: Writings from the Mauthausen Concentration Camp

During the time of National Socialism, written messages – letters and postcards – were a common means of communication. It is little known that this was also the case in and around the concentration camps, and this guided tour will address that topic. In a very limited way, prisoners could send and receive censored messages; they communicated in writing with each other in exceptional cases, but the guards also used this form of communication. The tour deals with various facets of preserved documents: they testify to despair, sometimes to an unbroken will to survive, or provide insight into the perspectives of the guards.
