In 2026, our popular "Spähikel" program "Tracking - In Pursuit of Nature" will lead you to a very special place: the conservation ponds and survival puddles in the Eckartsau Castle Park. The newly created and revitalized wetland biotopes not only ensure the survival of rare aquatic species but also strengthen the entire ecosystem.

Experience firsthand how species conservation works in the Danube-Auen National Park. The breeding pools simulate natural still waters and provide temporary habitats for endangered organisms. Three key species are in focus:

• European mudminnow (Umbra krameri) – a critically endangered fish that exhibits fascinating survival strategies.
• Water soldier (Stratiotes aloides) – a characteristic aquatic plant of intact floodplain biotopes.
• European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) – the only naturally occurring turtle species in Central Europe.
