The works of Inge Dick (*1941) are permeated by a central element: light in all its manifestations. The transition from day to night, the subtle nuances of sunlight, the reflections and shadows – all of this is made visible by the artist in her works.
85TH BIRTHDAY OF INGE DICK
Inge Dick is considered one of the most significant international figures in the field of contemporary experimental photography and film. Through her intensive engagement with painting and photography, she recognized early on that light is never constant or objective. Natural light is a living phenomenon: it changes with the hours of the day, the weather conditions, and the seasons.
Inge Dick's works reveal what often escapes the naked eye. Her paintings, photographic, and film works are poetic records of light. Her artistic development is characterized by a deep dedication: making the invisible visible. Her research on the subject of light is supported by four central principles that form the foundation of her artistic thinking: time and perception, seriality, geometric order and grids, as well as sensitivity and precision.
The exhibition at the Lower Austria State Gallery brings together, for the first time, all phases of the artist's work – from the 1960s to the present – in a representative selection. The retrospective honors Inge Dick's multifaceted oeuvre and is also a tribute on the occasion of her 85th birthday.
THE POETRY OF LIGHT
Inge Dick's work is a profound engagement with the phenomenon of light. At the beginning of her career are the spatula-painted images, initially colorful and then exclusively white, which make light visible on the surface through finely graduated grid structures. In parallel, black-and-white photographs are created, in which the shifting effects of light and shadow influence the composition of the images.
