Choreographer Ligia Lewis (*1983) works in the fields of performance, film, and installation formats. She explores how race, gender, and history shape our experiences and perceptions. The exhibition features a video recording of her choreography "deader than dead," a performative allegory on death. Lewis, who was born in the Dominican Republic and grew up in the USA, has been living and working in Berlin since 2013.
Bodies in Motion and Stillness
"deader than dead" is a performance that intertwines movement, stillness, physicality, and sound into a dense choreographic arrangement. It demonstrates how bodies act in moments of expansion and collapse, tipping, falling, or lingering in slow motion. Dance, theater, music, and singing appear equally alongside one another, with each element developing its own significance within the work.
Between Control and Dissolution
In "deader than dead," several performers take the stage. Their movements oscillate between powerful impulses and complete exhaustion. Musical interludes frequently emerge, accompanied by recitations from Shakespeare's "Macbeth."
Mortality Everywhere
The performance addresses transience, death, and the constant presence of mortality in everyday life. It was created in 2020 in Los Angeles during a time of societal upheaval in the USA and the Black Lives Matter movement. The video recording shown at the Kunsthalle Krems captures the performance, which was recorded in May 2025 at the International DANCE Festival in Munich.
