A room where the walls and floor are covered with characters – lines, arcs, curves that flow across the surface like a dance. With "Written Room," Parastou Forouhar (*1962) creates an installation that, through her precise craftsmanship, generates a distinctive atmosphere.
WRITTEN ROOM DEBUTS IN AUSTRIA
Parastou Forouhar is one of the most prominent voices in contemporary Iranian art. In her works, she combines her personal experiences as an exile with an artistic expression that transcends geographical and cultural boundaries. Her works are characterized by emotional depth, political reflection, and aesthetic clarity.
Since 1995, the Iranian-German artist has realized her spatial installation "Written Room" worldwide in various versions – now this impressive work will be shown for the first time in Austria. She applies calligraphic signs from the Persian alphabet by hand to the walls and floor of an exhibition space. The writing loses its function as a source of information and transforms into a visual space that opens up questions and invites contemplation. The characters often originate from poems, letters, or political texts, but through abundance, rhythmic repetition, or deliberate illegibility, they lose their function as carriers of information.
WALLS FULL OF WORDS THAT DO NOT SPEAK
In "Written Room," Forouhar's own experience is reflected: here, characters become a profound symbol of language loss, identity fractures, and cultural alienation. Thus, the ground floor of the Landesgalerie transforms into a powerful, expansive artwork in black and white.
The installation creates a unique atmosphere where foreignness becomes visible and tangible. The writing permeates the space, generating openness and inviting encounters.
