TOURDATA

Minoritenplatz 4, 3500 Krems an der Donau

Touching is explicitly encouraged! This exhibition turns art into a sensory experience. Sculptures, objects, and installations invite visitors to explore them with their hands, breaking taboos. How do the seemingly fragile yet simultaneously powerful paper sculptures by Tone Fink feel? What happens when visitors interact with a mechanically driven object by Cornelius Kolig? The exhibition demonstrates how art can touch us emotionally, intellectually, and physically.

Viennese Actionism and Haptic Art
Starting from Austrian art of the 1960s and 1970s, the exhibition spans to current positions. In the 1960s, art departs from traditional painting and sculpture, developing new forms of expression that place the body at the center. Viennese Actionism plays a crucial role in this transformation: art becomes physical.

In the actionistic works of Adolf Frohner, the physical process of creation is central. He tears open non-art materials, slits, and reshapes them. The physical engagement of the artist becomes evident in the object. In his work "AMVX" (1963), Frohner combines wood, a mattress, and iron. He creates a connection between everyday objects and artistic reflection on the human body and its perception.

Tactile Art
In the 1960s, the so-called tactile art emerges, where the physical experience of artworks through the sense of touch and direct interaction takes center stage. A significant representative is Cornelius Kolig. In his works, he explores, among other things, the boundaries between tactile perception and mechanical movement. Touching movable parts—such as rapidly rotating elements—triggers immediate physical stimuli. An additional sensory dimension opens up for the audience.
