Tonkünstler Orchestra: Brahms/Marx

An evening of concert filled with grandeur, power, and romance. Johannes Brahms' monumental Fourth Symphony meets the magnificent, rarely performed Romantic Piano Concerto by Joseph Marx. With Brahms' Symphony No. 4, a work is being performed that Richard Strauss described at its premiere as "a colossal work, with a grandeur of conception and invention, genius in form treatment, period construction, of eminent vigor and strength, new and original." In contrast to the grand, austere e-minor that resonates even at the end of this last Brahms symphony, Fabien Gabel presents the ever-blooming E-major from the Romantic Piano Concerto by Joseph Marx, composed in 1919. For the revival of the thunderous splendor and delicate flattery, Gabel has enlisted the highly skilled pianist Marc-André Hamelin. The Canadian Marc-André Hamelin captivates audiences worldwide with his brilliant technique and consummate musicianship, both in the classical repertoire and in rarely performed works. As a sought-after soloist and composer, he has released numerous award-winning recordings and performs in the most prestigious concert halls around the globe. Fabien Gabel has established himself as a versatile conductor with a particular focus on French music, the Second Viennese School, and rarely performed works. In addition to international engagements in Chicago, Berlin, and Melbourne, he will take over as Artistic Director of the Tonkünstler Orchestra Lower Austria starting in the 2025/2026 season.
