Oedipus Tyrant - People's Theater

Drought, plague, and infertility threaten to destroy Oedipus' kingdom, and the city cries out: "Who is to blame?" Sophocles' OEDIPUS THE KING tells the story of a man who wants to be king. In his search for those responsible for the epochal crisis, he ultimately turns against himself and thus becomes a tyrant. He sought to bring clarity to the city of Thebes, but leaves it and his daughters Ismene and Antigone with destruction, suffering, pain, deep sorrow, and anger. Nicolas Stemann, artistic director of the Schauspielhaus Zurich until 2024 and a celebrated director of world premieres of Elfriede Jelinek's works for decades, brings his acclaimed Zurich production back to the stage at the Volkstheater. His two actresses, Alicia Aumüller and Patrycia Ziolkowska, were awarded the Gertrud-Eysoldt-Ring for this "brilliant theater" (Neue Zürcher Zeitung).
