Philosophers in the Pigsty
The worker who speaks with the wisdom of a philosopher. Words embrace you, and rattling, you see a black-and-white film flickering in your soul. And then you hear the rainbow!
We follow into suburbs, long-closed cafes, junkyards… Francois Villon stumbles into the next bar with a tiger of suffering and sings Tom Waits. Charles Bukowski sits in the corner and finds love where no one expects it.
A Sergio Leone Western with authentic loners, more truthful than everyday life. Shots ring out that are nothing but kisses. No dead, only life. There’s nothing sentimental about it, as that doesn’t matter at all.
Bananz's characters seem to jump out of a film. Through the description of the smallest details and traits, they become vivid and tangible. Not least the irony and the revelation of some of his characters' quirks provide for a laugh or two. The evening swings lightly between Viennese songs and cabaret, with the singer accompanying himself on the guitar.
Press reviews:
...after not even two bars, one wonders, with or without looking: Since when does Tom Waits sing in Austrian?... Franz J. Sauer - Wiener
...scruffy strizzi-soul like Percy Sledge howled with leftover fat, but also Balkan Country and Western... Fritz Ostermayer - FM4
...his bluesy-rough voice sounds like Tom Waits from the Mühlviertel... A whiny mood never arises, which is also due to the fiery band... Nature genius or hard-earned art, it doesn’t matter, Philosophers in the Pigsty is a furious album... Sebastian Fasthuber - Falter
...the musician and songwriter with a voice that reveals a highly sensitive being between dirt and urgency... a true original... Reinhold Gruber - OÖ Nachrichten
...Bänkelsang, Bob Dylan guitar, stylistically wandering somewhere between chanson, soul, and rock ballad, that is this music... no bass and three brass players, it sounds great... Samir Köck - die Presse
...(the) songs are about losers, failures, uprooted individuals, doubters, blabberers, and overestimators. Somehow a bit of all of us.... A refreshingly unusual, philosophically quirky project.... Dietmar Hoscher - Concerto
