Music on the 12th continues its tribute to Ruth Schonthal (1924-2006) as an important composer of the Nazi exile, contrasting her this time with one of the most significant composers of her adopted home, the USA, Amy Beach (1867-1944).
In Ruth Schonthal's compositions, musical languages from different cultures and eras intersect, reflecting the broad spectrum of experiences that life in exile brought. The artistic ivory tower is foreign to her; she wishes to communicate with her audience. She has never denied her roots in the German Romanticism of Brahms, Chopin, and Schumann.
Amy Beach initially published her compositions under her husband's pseudonym and gained great international recognition after his death, becoming the first American woman to write a symphony. From her rich, almost completely unknown vocal works in this country, the concert's song selection focuses on pieces inspired by religious themes.
