Chanticleer is globally recognized for its diverse repertoire and virtuosity, captivating audiences with exceptional vocal precision, tonal purity, and stylistic expressiveness under the direction of Music Director Tim Keeler. The Boston Globe praised Chanticleer as “breathtaking in intonation, sound balance, richness of color, and stylistic sovereignty.” Founded in 1978 in San Francisco by singer and musicologist Louis Botto, Chanticleer quickly established itself as one of the most productive touring and recording ensembles in the world. Known as the “orchestra of voices,” the ensemble has performed thousands of live concerts and sold over a million recordings.

Chanticleer has its roots in Renaissance music, but today its repertoire also includes classical works, gospel, jazz, and popular music. A special highlight is the program A Chanticleer Christmas, with which the ensemble tours every December. In the fall of 2025, the new Christmas album Joy to the World will be released. With a strong commitment to new compositions and arrangements, Chanticleer regularly highlights American repertoire and a distinctly American sound—a reflection of the ensemble's stylistic and personal diversity. Many of its numerous recordings document these commissioned works and have been awarded prestigious prizes, including two Grammy Awards for Sir John Tavener’s Lamentations & Praises and the collection Colors of Love. The album Our American Journey was inducted into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2025. Chanticleer has received the Dale Warland Commission Award and the Chorus America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. Joseph H. Jennings, a long-time singer and music director of the ensemble, received the Brazeal Wayne Dennard Award for his outstanding work in African American choral heritage.

Named after the “clear-singing” rooster from Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Chanticleer was named Ensemble of the Year by Musical America in 2008 and was inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame. The ensemble's award-winning education programs—honored with the Chorus America Education Outreach Award—have reached tens of thousands of students since their inception.

**Our American Journey**
To celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence, Chanticleer honors the diverse voices, melodies, harmonies, and rhythms of our shared musical heritage. The ensemble explores how these musical traditions have influenced each other and what significance and impact they continue to have today. The centerpiece of the program is a specially commissioned work by composer Trevor Weston that illuminates the connection between traditional American hymn music and African American spirituals.

The additional repertoire traces the development of American choral music, from Black gospel quartets and shape-note singing to barbershop quartets and vocal jazz. It is complemented by arrangements of traditional bluegrass melodies and popular folk songs such as “Calling My Children Home” and “Shenandoah,” as well as arrangements of modern classics of American music like “Somebody to Love” by Queen and “Home” from The Wiz.
