How Bhutan Makes Happiness a Matter of State!
Bhutan has nearly 800,000 inhabitants – and 75 happiness assessors who, on behalf of the government, determine the satisfaction of the population. The happiness agents ask residents about their personal sense of happiness, providing the foundation for the policy of "Gross National Happiness," which the Bhutanese government uses to guide the country's development. The road movie "Agent of Happiness" follows happiness assessor Amber Gurung and his colleague in their investigations.
In their small car, Amber Gurung and his colleague go door to door, meeting a diverse array of people, whether in the village or in the countryside, whether tilling fields, praying, or meditating. Amber has a standardized questionnaire, and regardless of whether people own a cow or a donkey, a tractor or a laptop, they all share their lives with fearless honesty and quiet wisdom, revealing what makes them happy and what perhaps does not.
With "Agent of Happiness," the two directors open a window into other lives and a different, fascinating world. The film explores the question of what happiness can be. When people share their stories, it becomes apparent that experiencing happiness is not just a matter of external circumstances and that happiness is very, very fragile – no matter where one lives. Inevitably, parallels to one's own life emerge. And a film about the happiness of others may just make one a little happier oneself.
