Oswaldgasse 35A, 1120 Wien

by Calle Fuhr
A production of Theater am Werk
In cooperation with DOSSIER and Schauspielhaus Wien
World premiere
Direction: Calle Fuhr

The BAWAG scandal, IBIZA, secret plans against Germany, the NSA affair: Behind all these scandals are sources, that is, people who have provided journalists with sensitive information. Without sources, the revelations of the aforementioned cases would probably never have occurred: Without individuals willing to risk their jobs, their safety, and even their lives.

Together with the investigative journalism platform DOSSIER, author and director Calle Fuhr now places a source at the center of his new play. For months, Fuhr has spoken with journalists from Austria and Germany to understand the mechanisms behind so-called whistleblowing and was even able to come into personal contact with some sources. The resulting story is fictional—yet full of allusions to real cases. This psychological thriller tells of how sources are suppressed in corporations, how journalists are persecuted, and how sometimes, the truth prevails after all.

Calle Fuhr explains before the production how to bring investigative research to the stage: The great thing is that there is no recipe for it. The "how" does not emerge in silence at my desk, but in dialogue with DOSSIER. In recent years, we have found various approaches to give investigative research a space on stage—each project has been quite different. This is also true now, as we focus on whistleblowing in The Source and on the victims it can bring.

As part of The Source, a dialogue titled "Defending the Truth" will take place on April 25, 2026.

Calle Fuhr was born in 1994 in Düsseldorf and tells stories for the stage, radio, film, and on Spotify. He trained as a directing assistant in Düsseldorf, Prague, and Vienna. For several years, he has been dedicated to complex topics, bringing them to the stage in an engaging and comprehensible way. His works include pieces on the debt brake, evenings on corruption in Austria's largest corporation OMV, the brown coal company LEAG, and the rise and fall of real estate magnate René Benko. His works have been translated into several languages and showcased at international festivals.

DOSSIER is an independent, non-profit Austrian medium for investigative and data-driven journalism, founded in 2012. It is characterized by intensive research, multimedia presentation, and strict ethical standards—financed by its audience and collaborations, but without advertising or major sponsors.
