It remains a mystery: Franz Schubert's two great piano trios were created almost incidentally; in the case of the B-flat Major Trio, we don't even know when. When the printed edition of the E-flat Major Trio was delivered in December 1828, Schubert was already dead, and the B-flat Major Trio was not published until 1836. And yet, the magic of both works continues to captivate us to this day: they are timeless, always feel immediate, and almost as if they were just composed. Rudolf Buchbinder has been fascinated by these trios throughout his entire life as a pianist. For the matinee in Grafenegg, he invited two congenial partners with whom he shares long-standing artistic friendships: Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider and Gautier Capuçon.
