The nearly ninety-year-old Anette, a professor of literary studies, stands on the threshold of her final journey: she knows that she must soon die and seeks a lyrical farewell from life.

In this phase of her life, she takes the train to Klagenfurt once more and makes her way to the grave of Ingeborg Bachmann, carrying with her Bachmann's poems, which are meant to accompany Anette during this time (and have always accompanied her throughout her life). She searches for traces of beauty and begins to write a fictional letter to Ingeborg Bachmann during the journey.

In her direct address to the deceased, Anette reflects on life and aging as a woman in a male-dominated world. Writing the fictional letter expands her understanding of what has been troubling her and what she thought she faced alone, only to realize she was not. In her reflection, she finds reconciliation with her past life by capturing the moments of poetic beauty that have always existed, while simultaneously developing the willingness to acknowledge and endure how inextricably life and death are intertwined.

Thus, the text is also a love letter to the power of literature, which is capable of sharpening one's perspective on their own life and circumstances, and providing impulses for one's own thinking. For in literature, we recognize that all crises and transitions are part of being human.
