King Lear

With King Lear, the Austria Theater brings one of humanity's great dramas to the stage of the Tribüne Linz. The story of the old king who divides his kingdom and is blinded by flattery is more than 400 years old – and feels more relevant today than ever. It is about power and honesty, the desire for recognition, loyalty, betrayal, and the question of whom we can truly trust.

The production intentionally sets the action in the present. The language remains true to Shakespeare, but the costumes and appearance bring the characters into our world. This creates an immediate perspective on conflicts that we know all too well: families breaking under expectations, people unwilling to hear the truth, and a system that is thrown into chaos by greed and deception.

At the center is Lear, whose fall from power leads to a journey of realization and vulnerability. The Fool plays a special role alongside him: he is the voice of truth in a kingdom that does not want to hear it. Edmund's intrigue and the sisters' conflict also illustrate how the struggle for influence and love can change people.
