Double Lecture on the Occasion of the 150th Birthday of Walter Lilie (1876 - 1924)

To celebrate the 150th birthday of the painter Walter Lilie (1876–1924), who worked in Schwetzingen, "Museum frei Haus" of the Museum of the City of Schwetzingen invites you to a special evening: A double lecture will illuminate the life and work of two outstanding artists of the Art Nouveau period – Walter Lilie and Josef Kaspar Sattler – while simultaneously opening new perspectives on the partnership between the cities of Schrobenhausen and Schwetzingen.

Around 1900, the art world was in a state of upheaval: New lines, new colors, and new forms defined an era between tradition and modernity. The graphic artist and book illustrator Josef Kaspar Sattler, who worked in Strasbourg, and the painter Walter Lilie, who developed a color-intensive visual language in Switzerland, exemplify this transformative period. Both artists shaped Art Nouveau in their own unique ways – yet they share similar themes and a common spirit of renewal.

The speakers Claudia Freitag-Mair and Dr. Barbara Gilsdorf will guide us through the life, art, and times of both artists in two coordinated expert lectures. The event will be moderated by Lars Maurer, the museum director of the Museum of the City of Schwetzingen.

About the speaker Claudia Freitag-Mair: Claudia Freitag-Mair, head of the cultural office of the city of Schrobenhausen, has worked for many years in the museum and cultural history sector and is deeply engaged with the art and design of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her focus includes the visual arts of Art Nouveau and their regional manifestations. In lectures, publications, and exhibition projects, she particularly addresses how artistic developments of the turn of the century become visible in local contexts.

About the speaker Dr. Barbara Gilsdorf: Dr. Barbara Gilsdorf, cultural officer of the city of Schwetzingen, is a trained art historian. In her dissertation, she extensively studied the art of Art Nouveau and symbolism. In addition to her role as cultural officer in Schwetzingen, she regularly works as a speaker, conveying art historical topics to a broad audience.

Admission is free. Registration is requested at: Museum Director Lars Maurer lars.maurer@schwetzingen.de 06202 / 87-468
