A ghost is haunting the Western world: the ghost of irrationalism. The classic values of the Enlightenment are being questioned by conspiracy theorists, esotericists, and self-proclaimed lateral thinkers – as well as modern science and its achievements.

But what characterizes modern science at all? How did it come into being? What are its principles? And what is the validity of the accusation that it is a power-driven elite project that systematically suppresses "true knowledge"?
