Advanced Course on Variety Knowledge: Confusable Varieties & Baking Varieties

The advanced seminar is aimed at participants who have already completed an introductory course or have good prior knowledge of the topic of variety identification. The goal of the seminars is to refresh and solidify existing knowledge and to explore interesting aspects of pomology in depth through annually changing themes. Practical identification exercises will also be included. This course will focus on the topics of confusing varieties, i.e., which apple varieties are particularly similar and how to reliably determine which variety it is. Additionally, we will discuss fruit varieties that are especially suitable for baking. Here, we will look not only at apples and pears but also at plum varieties. Each participant will receive seminar materials on these topics, which can be collected in the accompanying seminar folder. Please bring the identification literature "Color Atlas of Old Fruit Varieties," Ulmer Verlag, if available. Unknown varieties (5 fruits each) are welcome to be brought for joint identification. Markus Zehnder from Balingen was a specialist advisor for fruit and horticulture at the Zollernalbkreis district office for many years and is an experienced pomologist. His passion is old fruit varieties, their flavors, and uses. It is particularly important to him to pass on knowledge about these varieties to a younger generation.
