The Klezmatics

It is a small sensation to welcome this legendary band as guests at the Igel, Folk Club Waidhofen for the first time. The Klezmatics have been one of the most influential formations of modern Klezmer music since their founding in 1986 in New York's East Village. The band has been significantly shaped by Frank London, a trumpeter, co-founder, and to this day one of the central cultural figures of the genre, who has played a crucial role in initiating the international Klezmer revival with his vision. From the very beginning, The Klezmatics renewed the Yiddish music tradition with a contemporary, cosmopolitan approach, opening it up to influences from jazz, gospel, classical, punk, Latin, and Balkan music. Their music is deeply rooted in the Eastern European Jewish tradition, yet it connects this with a clear social stance and great stylistic openness. To celebrate their 40th anniversary, the band is on a world tour and promises ecstatic, high-energy concerts that impressively bring together the past, present, and future of Klezmer music.
