In her works, the artist Anna Jocham deals with the question of how photographic images create and influence reality. To this end, she questions the supposed claim to truth of photography and examines the impact of the flood of images on society.

The exhibition "Expanded Shadows" at the Marenzi Gallery provides an overview of the various media image worlds that Jocham works with. The spectrum ranges from manipulated film and advertising images from the 1990s and 2000s to current phenomena such as the so-called doomscrolling on social networks. The focus is on the influence of media consumption on social relationships, body images, consumer behavior, and notions of intimacy.

At the beginning of the exhibition, the work group "Through The Looking Glass I" is on display. The large-format analog photographs are based on imagery from the advertising and film industry. Through long exposure and image cropping, the motifs are alienated and placed in a new context. The series critically engages with the representation of women as well as the power dynamics within the high-end advertising and film industry.

These works are complemented by additional photographic pieces that depict various consumption situations, such as an older woman shopping or a person on a smartphone viewing war coverage. The exhibition concludes with the video work "Through The Looking Glass II." For this piece, Jocham specifically trained an algorithm on a social media platform in 2022. By consciously searching for and interacting with misogynistic content, the recommendation algorithm changed within minutes. After just seven minutes, the so-called "For-You-Page" was almost exclusively dominated by misogynistic content. The screen recording created during this process is condensed in the video work into a flood of images reminiscent of the endless scrolling on social networks.

Jocham was born in 1997 in Voitsberg and is currently studying Fine Arts at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Prior to that, she completed her bachelor's degree at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen and attended the HTBLVA Ortweinschule in Graz from 2011 to 2016. She exhibits internationally and was one of four winners of the Student Carte Blanche Section at Paris Photo in 2024. She is also on the shortlist for the Wolf Suschitzky Photography Prize in 2025 and will soon exhibit at the Austrian Cultural Forum in London and in 2026 at Fotohof Salzburg.
