Karl Hofer (1878–1955) is considered one of the most independent painters of German modernism. Between New Objectivity and Magical Realism, he developed a distinctive visual language.

Karl Hofer (1878–1955) is regarded as one of the most independent painters of German modernism. He developed a unique visual language between New Objectivity and Magical Realism. The exhibition features over 60 paintings that present the key themes, aesthetic power, and the underlying human image in Hofer's art through examples from all phases of his work.
The exhibition on the 3rd floor of Schloss Achberg is complemented by paintings from artists of the Halle School, which show echoes of Hofer's painting, as well as works by Willi Baumeister. These works shed light on the reception of Hofer's art between 1945 and 1955 in both East and West.
The exhibition is a collaboration between the Arthouse Collection, the Kunstmuseum Moritzburg Halle (Saale), Schloss Achberg, the Städtische Galerie Bietigheim-Bissingen, and the Kunsthalle Rostock.
