Pathetic! The concert with which the Bruckner Orchestra Linz opens the cycle of Great Orchestras in the 26–27 season performs nothing less than the greatest possible dramatic gesture. At the center of the program is Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's eponymous 6th Symphony in B minor, one of the great works in music history, which begins with the Sinfonia to Giuseppe Verdi's opera La forza del destino, equally fateful. Anna Rakitina, one of the most exciting conductors of the young generation, makes her debut at the podium; she has achieved success in recent years worldwide, from the New York Philharmonic to the Saxon State Orchestra in Dresden. Accompanying her as a soloist is Stefan Dohr, one of the leading horn players of our time: since 1993, he has been the principal horn player of the Berlin Philharmonic and is also in demand internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. Dohr brings the highly virtuosic concert for horn and orchestra by the Icelandic-German composer Steingrímur Rohloff to its Austrian premiere, joining the illustrious ranks of those composers who have written new works "tailored" for him.
