When "Kathrein" locked away the violin on November 25, the quiet season began in earlier centuries. Advent was a strict fasting period. The fasting only ended on Christmas Eve after the midnight mass. Gifts were brought by St. Nicholas on December 6: apples, nuts, and perhaps even a gingerbread. Christmas trees were not known during the Baroque period and even after the death of Joseph Haydn.
