After several years of closure, the observatory of the Free Waldorf School Engelberg is reopening its doors – inviting everyone to rediscover the starry sky. Only a few schools in Germany have their own observatory. At Engelberg, it has long been more than just a school offering: with its reopening in January, the observatory is now also open to families, astronomy enthusiasts, and visitors from the entire Remstal region. A look through the telescope makes the cosmos tangible – fascinating for both young and old. The reopening was preceded by more than two years of intensive preparation. Thanks to the significant voluntary commitment of Cord Florian Bonatz, a team of parents and teachers, as well as numerous supporters, the observatory has been extensively renovated, technically updated, and equipped for the future. Although the historic telescope from 1968 could not be preserved, it has been replaced by modern top technology. A special highlight is the new main instrument: a Celestron C14 XLT Schmidt-Cassegrain, a powerful reflector telescope that allows for impressive observations of the moon, planets, star clusters, and distant galaxies. This investment was made possible, among other things, by the support of the Eva and Kurt Schneider Foundation and private donations. With regular observation evenings, astronomical tours, and changing informational offerings, the Engelberg Observatory is a new attraction for everyone who wants to experience the magic of the night sky – a true gem in the Remstal and a rewarding destination for the curious and star enthusiasts.
