Sparks Unteruhldingen

The burning of the "Funken" by the Funkenbuben Unteruhldingen will take place this year on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 7:00 PM at the Hafenloch in Unteruhldingen. Join us as the traditional bonfire is lit, as usual, on the weekend after Ash Wednesday - an ancient fire custom that is still widespread in the Swabian-Alemannic region today. The origin of this custom is unclear, although it is documented exceptionally early. However, it is believed that the bonfire dates back to a pagan Germanic tradition aimed at driving away winter. The bonfire is organized by the Funkenbuben Unteruhldingen, who build the bonfire from wood and adorn it with a crafted witch at the top of the bonfire - when this witch falls victim to the flames, which is said to bring good luck, the joy is immense. In line with the Alemannic Carnival, the burning of a witch doll on the bonfire was introduced in the 19th century.
