An important part of Mahler's universe is occupied by the creative works of his contemporaries. Among the most significant during his time in Steinbach am Attersee was certainly Johannes Brahms (1833–1897), who spent his summer months not far away in the spa town of Bad Ischl. Occasionally, Mahler would ride his bicycle there to visit the aging master and described these excursions with a quote from Goethe's Faust: “From time to time I like to see the old man,” a witty allusion to Mephistopheles, who occasionally drops by to see God. This concert presents works by both composers and texts from Mahler's memories that illuminate this extraordinary relationship.
