Thursday, May 14, and Friday, May 15, 2026 What do Lake Constance and a cave in eastern Spain have in common? Both bear witness to the desire of Stone Age cultures for perhaps the sweetest temptation found in nature: honey. Completely without machines, with 0% industrial sugar, and guaranteed 100% organic, this "liquid gold" was already a treasure back then, for which hardly any effort was too great. While around 10,000 years ago people were still content with searching for wild bees and their viscous reserves – as depicted in a cave painting in the Cuevas de la Araña in eastern Spain – the pile dwellers at Lake Constance were already able, by 3000 BC, to provide the industrious insects with attractive homes using so-called "log hives." This made harvesting fresh honey significantly easier. Local researcher and organic beekeeper Herbert Gieß, who is himself a proud owner of log hives made according to Stone Age models, explains what to consider in this early form of beekeeping. Tip: At Mr. Gieß's stand, you can taste real "Stone Age honey."
