When 90 percent of Icelandic women went on strike one autumn morning in 1975, leaving their jobs and homes because they refused to work, cook, or take care of the children, they brought their country to a standstill and catapulted Iceland to the "best place in the world to be a woman."
Told for the first time by the women themselves and featuring playful animations, A DAY WITHOUT WOMEN is subversive and unexpectedly funny. "We loved our chauvinistic pigs," recalls one of the activists, "we just wanted to change them a little!"
The film is set to be released in time for the 50th anniversary of the strike in 2025 and encourages a rethinking of what is possible with its message about the collective power of women to change their society.
