Salzburg Rupert Fair

What is special about the Rupertikirtag? The Rupertikirtag is celebrated in the tradition of a cathedral consecration festival. For over 40 years, the squares around Salzburg Cathedral have transformed into a stage for vibrant customs, folk and brass music, typical delicacies, and historical rides such as ghost trains and carousel rides for five days around the feast day of Saint Rupert. It is best to visit the Rupertikirtag dressed in lederhosen and dirndl.

Who was Saint Rupert? Rupert was a bishop to whom the Roman settlement of Juvavum (now Salzburg) was granted, and in 696, he laid the foundation for present-day Salzburg with the establishment of the Archabbey of St. Peter. He is the patron saint of Salzburg and is celebrated on September 24.
