"Go and show yourselves to the priests!" (Gospel of Luke) - Religion, Medicine, and Care for the Poor

In the history of the Count's settlement of Pfullendorf, which was elevated to a Free Imperial City in 1220, the hospital has played a central role for over 800 years. The hospital had various responsibilities and was, until the mid-20th century, the most important source of funding for the city, until it was replaced by the flourishing medium-sized businesses and companies. Based on Christian charity for the poor and sick, funds, houses, and lands were donated, which were collected, managed, and utilized in a hospital fund. In addition to municipal buildings, a leper and poor house was also operated and financed until 1873. In 1976, the property was finally sold.

On September 10, 2026, the Benedictine Jacob Kaffanke from Ramsberg will speak at the Municipal Museum "Altes Haus" at 7:00 PM about the history of the Pfullendorf leper house, which no longer exists today. Admission is free, and donations are welcome. Please note that there is no barrier-free access to the Altes Haus. Participation is free of charge, and registration is not required. The lecture will take place in the "Altes Haus," which was built in 1317 as a small noble residential tower and expanded into a half-timbered house at the beginning of the 15th century. An architectural feature is the radial beam structure.
