Pleasure hike - Border walks Lüderbach

After World War II, the four victorious powers divided Germany. In 1961, the GDR initially erected a wall in Berlin and later along the entire approximately 1,400 km long border, as numerous people were leaving the East. To better guard the border, the GDR gradually expanded the border area, creating a five-kilometer-wide restricted zone with a protection strip and a control strip. Border towers were built for better surveillance. Parts of this border facility are still visible today, such as the patrol path and individual border towers. During the hike, the history of the German division is discussed based on these visible relics.

Within the protection strip of the restricted area, a diverse fauna and flora developed, as plants and animals could retreat here and live undisturbed. Fortunately, this was recognized early on, and shortly after the fall of the wall, the Nature Conservation Project "Grünes Band Deutschland" (Green Belt Germany) was established by the Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz in Deutschland (BUND) and the Free State of Thuringia. Today, the strip in Hesse and Thuringia is protected as a National Natural Monument.

The hike initially follows the patrol path and continues on the Thuringian side towards Ifta. At the former GDR border tower, we enjoy a picnic with regional delicacies from Teichhof in Grandenborn and from Holles Schaf. After about 8 kilometers, we return to the hiking parking lot.
