Songs of nightingales, quails, and cuckoos, a murmuring brook, lightning and thunder, shepherd's melodies: Under the direction of Markus Poschner, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz brings Beethoven's 6th Symphony "Pastoral" to the concert hall, capturing the sound of nature. The nature lover and enthusiastic walker Beethoven set his impressions of rural life to music, which ultimately coalesces into a magnificent hymn. The "Pastoral" stands in a long tradition: Musical pastoral scenes were already extremely popular in Baroque music, a theme that Francis Poulenc picked up in his 1928 completed Concert champêtre (Rural Concert) for harpsichord and orchestra: a neoclassically shimmering homage to French Baroque music. The harpsichord virtuoso Jean Rondeau interprets this tension-filled work that oscillates between old and new, whose pastoral mood is contrasted by Claude Debussy's La Mer, another famous sound-painting of nature, where one can almost taste the salty sea air.
