Heretische Engel

On a medieval gravestone in Bosnia, it reads: “Kadhi hti biti, tgdi ne bih” – “I wanted to exist, but I could not.” When Katarina Livljanić read this inscription, she thought about how many people during the war in the 1990s must have felt exactly the same way.

Thus, the project "Heretical Angels" began. These are angels who belong to no religion or ideology, good and fallen, bright and dark angels, whose voices resonate here.

The sources used for the work tell of the unique cultural diversity of the region. However, on a musical level, the manuscripts from the 12th to 15th centuries only provide hints. Therefore, the artists, the renowned Parisian ensemble Dialogos and the Croatian group Kantaduri, created their own soundscape. Pure folk music from the Dalmatian Zagora and western Herzegovina blends with the choral tradition of ancient theater pieces.
