Climate change and the energy transition: current situation, challenges, and opportunities

Climate change poses enormous challenges for politics, the economy, and society. In his lecture, Dr.-Ing. Peter Schäfer provides a clear overview of the links between global warming and CO2 emissions from fossil fuels, and demonstrates how concrete climate goals and strategies for the energy transition can be derived from this. In doing so, he examines the fundamentals of energy production and consumption, the expansion of renewable energy, the role of green hydrogen and electromobility, as well as the opportunities and challenges for Germany as an industrial hub. Finally, he turns his attention to the key areas of action for the sustainable transformation of our economic system. Dr.-Ing. Peter Schäfer studied and earned his doctorate at the University of Stuttgart and worked for many years as a manager in the automotive industry, most recently as Managing Director of Porsche Engineering Group GmbH. Since his retirement, he has been actively involved in various volunteer roles (including as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Research Institute for Automotive Engineering and Vehicle Engines Stuttgart at the University of Stuttgart) and is deeply committed to addressing the issues of climate change and the energy transition.
