WALTER NIEMANN: The painter, sculptor, and graphic artist Walter Niemann and his wife, the radio play producer Charlotte Niemann, belonged to the second generation of the artist colony Worpswede and significantly shaped it from 1945 onwards. Born in Hamburg in 1915, Walter Niemann visited Worpswede repeatedly, which he made his home in 1941. After an apprenticeship as a painter, passing his master craftsman examination, and military service, Walter Niemann connected directly to the first generation of artists and expanded the artistic spectrum of the place with his material pictures, handcrafted objects, and versatility. Walter Niemann is often referred to as a "jack of all trades." He tirelessly produced artworks using a variety of materials such as wood and stone, various metals, glass, and ceramics, as well as everyday objects like screws, nails, and organ pipes. In the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, Niemann regularly participated in art exhibitions and received numerous public commissions. Niemann passed away in 1986 and is buried in the Worpswede cemetery today.
