In the novel by the then just 19-year-old author, young scientist Victor Frankenstein creates a human being, but he is seized by horror and flees from his own creation. Is it a demonic monster, or is the being a vulnerable creature longing for love and affection? From the Prometheus myth of antiquity through the alchemical experiments of the Middle Ages to the present day - the desire to create an artificial human runs through history and is more relevant today than ever.
