Pioneer Project: Renaturation of the Ahlen-Falkenberger Moor Lecture by Sylvia Scholze, NABU Foundation for National Natural Heritage, Berlin
On Sunday, February 22, 2026, a lecture on the rewetting project of NABU in the Ahlen-Falkenberger Moor will take place at the Moor Information Center Ahlenmoor. Project manager Ms. Scholze will provide the audience with an update on the current status of the project and offer insights into the construction site. Additionally, she will share impressions from the guided tours.
From the conflict over peat extraction at the Ahlen-Falkenberger Moor, a cooperative renaturation initiative has emerged after nearly two years of construction. NABU, Gramoflor, and local partners are working to renature nearly 200 hectares of the Ahlen Moor by the year 2041, thereby securing it as a CO2 sink and habitat. During this time, in the first of six construction phases, the topsoil altered by agriculture has been removed in layers, a water reservoir has been prepared, peat moss propagation ponds have been built, and an initial section has been completed.
Initial successes are also evident in the cultivation areas: sundew, cotton grass, and of course, peat moss are growing well and establishing themselves. Birds are also returning. REWE is the sponsor of this pioneering project and supports the NABU Climate Fund.
The lecture will take place in the seminar room on the first floor of the MoorIZ. Doors open at 3:45 PM. Tickets can be purchased through the booking system at www.ahlenmoor.de/tickets.
