The mill is the beginning and the end. The black mill in the forest. The swamp forest. The twilight forest. The dead forest. From here, Krabat tries to escape but must realize that he cannot escape the grinding of time. In search of truth in a splintering world, Krabat is an eternal wanderer who can never find peace. KRABAT DIES is a trilingual piece that brings the story of Krabat closer to an audience beyond the Sorbian settlement area through strong imagery and linguistic mixing in Upper Sorbian, Lower Sorbian, and German. Based on Sorbian folk songs and legends from Lusatia, a German-Sorbian music theater piece is created, which uses puppetry, hurdy-gurdy, and live electronics to place the figure of Krabat in a contemporary context. The sonic center of KRABAT DIES is a hurdy-gurdy, which, as an instrument with its history, embodies the transformation of social movements. Johannes Kürschner will create contemporary compositions for the hurdy-gurdy, where the historical instrument is combined with electro-acoustic inputs, forming the basis to make Krabat's legendary journey through time an immersive overall work of text/narration, performance, puppetry, and music.
