Bahnhof 1, 38300 Wolfenbüttel

In the city center, several watermills once turned their wheels in ancient times, and near the Karlsberg bastion, there were two post windmills. The water power was not only used for grinding grain but also drove devices for oil extraction, cloth fulling, and bark mills for grinding tree bark for tanneries. In the second half of the 19th century, Wolfenbüttel was also considered a center of the mill construction industry. In 1852, entrepreneurs Gottlieb Luther (mill builder) and Anton Carl Peters (son of a miller) founded the "First German Mill Construction Institute" near the train station at Schulwall, laying the foundation for the now-famous Braunschweig mill construction industry, which produced a global company with the establishment of MIAG in the 1920s. Today, numerous tangible witnesses of the history of mills and mill construction can still be seen in the city. We will visit these sites during our approximately 90-minute walk through Wolfenbüttel, which participants will subsequently see with new eyes. Led by: Rüdiger Hagen.
