Especially in the waning winter, a fasting retreat supports the motivation to approach changes with renewed energy and clear focus. For five days, we abstain from solid food, allowing our body, mind, and soul to concentrate on themselves. This process is supported by movement, such as short hikes and gymnastics, as well as mindfulness exercises and exchanges with other participants. The knowledgeable and experienced fasting leader empathetically guides us through the entire process, introducing us to physical changes, various backgrounds, and reflection phases, thereby ensuring safety, even for first-time fasters. Professionally supervised fasting leads to a reduction in stress, strengthens the immune system, and helps us practice new behavioral patterns. We take eight days to cleanse the body from the inside and outside – and to mindfully engage with our thoughts and feelings. During the fasting according to Dr. Buchinger, we consume only liquid nourishment in the form of high-quality vegetable broths or fruit juices for five days, and we drink plenty of tea and water. Our body can handle scarcity better than abundance – by focusing inward, it can clean up at the cellular level, break down excess, and use this for energy production and the rebuilding of cells. This so-called autophagy is significantly enhanced by fasting and is an excellent preventive health measure, strengthening the immune system and rejuvenating the individual.
