They can also be found in the vicinity of the Dammer Mountains, the so-called "Forgotten Places." These were created by humans in the past (some even centuries ago) and were later abandoned. Here, work was done, and lives were lived. The traces left behind can harbor underestimated dangers, depending on the nature of the sites. Today, nature is reclaiming the remnants of human use. On our journey of discovery, history becomes palpable. We witness transience, but also experience the power of memory and cast an uncertain glance into the future. On our tour "between admonition and hope," we present the old military site located three kilometers northwest of the town of Damme. It was deliberately established in the middle of the Dammer Mountains in 1935. Until 2024, it was inaccessible to the public for good reason. The human alteration of the landscape and the remnants of old buildings contribute to the fascination of this place, just as much as the rich diversity of the natural and forest site, which has been transferred to the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU) as National Natural Heritage since 2013 and is officially named DBU Naturerbe Dammer Berge.
