The historic Easter Wheel Run in Lügde, East Westphalia, is one of the most impressive Easter customs in Europe: On Easter Sunday 2026, April 5th, six man-high, 280-kilogram oak wheels will race down from the Lügde mountain into the valley once again. Every year, thousands watch to see if the fireballs will reach their target. The documented roots of the Lügde Easter Wheel Run date back to the 18th century. In 2018, UNESCO honored the tradition with special recognition: since then, it has been part of Germany's Intangible Cultural Heritage. The event is organized and maintained by the Osterdechenverein Lügde. In 2024, WDR dedicated a live broadcast to the event.
