Jody Korbach - Watch out, Kasper! Behind you! The crocodile!

There is (once again) war, and everything feels somehow strange. We need someone to make us laugh to endure it all. Ha – Ha. And really, someone should talk to those "up there," teach them a bit of reason. Speaking Truth to Power. Fortunately, there is a figure that combines both: the Harlequin (m/f/d). But is he even on our side? Everything he does seems rather marked by resignation and nihilism. In private, he is probably quite an unpleasant character. Do we really need more cynics? After all, humor is just opium for the people, and doesn’t it defuse the harsh reality and threat we find ourselves in? Laugh too heartily, turn your back on the wrong person, and suddenly you have a knife in your back.

In her exhibition "Watch out, Kasper! Behind you! The Crocodile!" Jody Korbach fills the spaces of WRG SENSOR with an installation that spans all three rooms, consisting of photo wallpapers, paintings, books, and things that arise when one tries to build something secure in these strange times. She addresses the tension between enduring, holding one’s head high, and resignation. The recurring theme of the clown in her work meets the artist's personal confrontation with the current militarization of society and the German post-war history. She is afraid but can only laugh at calls for defensiveness. True security – does it exist, and who pays the price? Jody Korbach braces herself for the worst: when no one laughs.
